My FAVORITE Homemade Laundry Stain Remover

July 22, 2015 by Sarah

At this stage of life, the household product that I use most around here is stain remover.  I use it every single day that I do laundry, which is basically every day since I have laundry coming out of my ears.  Actually, maybe stain remover and laundry detergent are tied for first!  🙂

I’ve posted here before about my homemade laundry stain remover, but I thought it was time I did an update for you all since my method has been simplified just a tad.  I sort of touched on it when I shared this homemade miracle cleaner.

My updated method for attacking fresh and set in laundry stains is to essentially combine those posts.  The ingredients are still the same as in my original homemade laundry stain remover recipe, but the method is much simpler.  Here’s the rundown.

Ingredients:
Dawn dishwashing liquid
hydrogen peroxide

baking soda

Directions:

1.  Make a batch of homemade miracle cleaner.  I use 1 cup Dawn with 2 cups hydrogen peroxide in my squirt bottle. {The ratio is 1 part Dawn to 2 parts hydrogen peroxide if you want to make more or less}.

2.  Spray the stain remover over the affected area and then sprinkle with baking soda.
Note:  A fresh mixture of the spray will start out blue, but don’t be surprised if it turns clear in a couple of hours after light hits the solution.  The color change does not affect its effectiveness.

3.  Spray more stain remover on the area and use an old toothbrush to scrub into a paste.

4.  Let this sit for at least an hour, although I would let this sit overnight for set in stains.

5.  Launder as usual.

**Note:  You don’t have to use baking soda with the solution every time.  The spray alone will usually work for me on fresh or lighter color stains, however, I find that the darker or set in stains don’t come out completely unless I use the baking soda along with it.  Since I usually want to make sure everything comes out the first time, I usually just go straight for the spray and baking soda combo.

I’ve been using this method for over a year and I am loving the results.  I can’t tell you the last time that I have purchased stain remover from the store. Our littlest guy had stained up his church outfit pretty bad, as you can see.

Even though the lighting on this picture is better since it was taken during the day, the fact that the stains are gone is what made me happy!

I don’t know about you, but I think these results speak for themselves!

I have enjoyed using homemade laundry detergent for about a year now, but was thinking that it would be good to find a homemade stain remover too! Especially now that my son is starting to be more mobile, and I will probably have more stains to remove like your son's shirt! 🙂 Thanks for sharing your recipe.

So glad you found the recipe and I hope it will be helpful – I use it ALL the time with my kids's clothes and stains. Your little guy will need it!! 🙂
