DIY Headband Holder Tutorial

January 10, 2017 by Sarah

Even though I know this won’t be very useful for all the boy moms out there (sorry!), I’m excited to share this DIY headband holder tutorial with you today.  I’ve been meaning to get this posted for a while now!

This DIY Headband Holder is a great way to keep hair accessories neat and organized. And it looks cute too!

One of the things I love about being a girl mom is the fun we get to have playing with hair.  I’m terrible at doing my own hair, but I love having fun with hers.  Ha!  The downside to all that is – all the hair accessories!

Once we moved our daughter from a shared bedroom to her own bedroom, I have been slowly decorating and organizing her new space.  I was never a fan of my old solution for her headbands and hair bows (I had them all shoved in a basket), so I was determined to get it right since I was redecorating anyway.

I’d seen so many cute boards you can make and hang on the wall, but she has very little space for wall hangings.  Thank you, 1940’s Cape Cod house with slanted ceilings!  Hanging something on the wall wasn’t going to work.

Thankfully, I scoured the internet to get some ideas and found an option that would work.  It’s been a couple of months now and this DIY headband holder has been a great solution to our hair accessory storage problems!

Here’s what I used to make my daughter’s new headband holder:

  • oatmeal container
  • fabric swatch
  • scissors
  • hem tape*
  • iron
  • spray adhesive*
  • protective top coat* (similar item)
  • glue gun
  • ribbon
  • decorative buttons (or other embellishments)

**Please ignore the gray spray paint in the picture.  I tried using it for the project and it was a fail.  More details on that later in the post.

Step 1:  Prepare the fabric

Cut your fabric down to 17.5 inches by 10.5 inches and iron out any wrinkles.  This is actually a bandana that I spotted at Hobby Lobby and thought the color and pattern was perfect, so I used it for my fabric.

Use the fusible hem tape to add a ½ inch hem to one of the short edges of the fabric.

Spray the adhesive onto the back of the fabric.  Make sure you do this in a ventilated space and use cardboard or some newspaper underneath because this can get sticky.

Step 2:  Attach the fabric

Starting with the rough edge, wrap the fabric around the oatmeal container.  Make sure to line the fabric up to the plastic rim at the top of the container.  Do this slowly so you get the fabric on smooth and without bubbles.

Hot glue the hemmed edge down once you have wrapped it all the way around.  Glue the bottom edge of the fabric too, folding it under at the bottom of the container.

Optional: Cut a piece of fabric and hot glue it on the underside of the container.  This gives it a more finished look, but not necessary.

Spray the protective topcoat over the fabric.

Step 3:  Make it pretty

Hot glue your ribbon to the bottom edge of the container.  I added a shorter ribbon on top of it to give it a layered look.  Add any buttons or embellishments. (I got my ribbon & button from Hobby Lobby).

In full disclosure:  I originally spray painted the lid a cute gray color, but it began to flake off once we started using it.  As the plastic lid bent, the paint eventually popped off.  I thought about trying again and then using Mod Podge* to seal the lid, but decided that it looked just fine without it.  If you intend to display the headbands and don’t plan to use the inside of it for additional storage, then a spray-painted lid would really look cute.  It’s up to you!

I love that this headband holder is such a cute yet functional solution.  Headbands slide right around the container.  Pop the plastic lid off and you have a place for all the other hair bows and accessories.

This simple DIY headband holder was the perfect nap time project.  The project was very affordable and depending on what supplies you already had on hand, could potentially cost you next to nothing.

What a great idea! I have 2 girls and LOTS of bows. My oldest (4) loves headbands but we don’t have many – partly because I’ve never had a good place to store them. Thanks for the tip! A

"The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness "The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness we feel is found not in us but outside of us. The solutions to our problems and pain aren't found in self-love, but in God's love.

The God who created us, who created the universe, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is the one who provides us with the purpose and satisfaction we're seeking. While self love depletes, God's love for us doesn't. He showed us his love by sending Jesus to die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever with him. Self-love is superficial and temporary. God's love is profound and eternal."
