Beach Vacation 2010 {Corolla Beach, NC}

September 1, 2010 by Sarah

Two weeks ago today, Kevin and I were in Corolla Beach, NC enjoying the beach!  It had been 3 years since my feet stepped foot on a beach, and I must say this trip was long overdo!  As a kid, my family took a beach vacation practically every summer.  Since we’ve been married, we still usually take at least one vacation a summer, but the location has varied.  We try to alternate between trips with my family or Kev’s.  Last year, my family didn’t take a vacation, nor did Kev’s.  It was honestly okay with me because I was so huge and definitely had no interest in putting on a swimsuit. I was so excited about what was to be our upcoming arrival, so I was more than ok with not having an official vacation last summer.
Obviously, our summer did not end the way we had anticipated.  And after the crazy year we had, I could hardly wait to get to the beach this year!  I’m truly a beach girl at heart.  The mountains are great and so beautiful, but there is something so relaxing to me about the beach.  I love the water and even enjoy attempting to sunbath.  Obviously my fair skin limits me on that front, but I like to try!  I think I could honestly sit on the beach all day, everyday and never get tired of it!  So fun!

So, a couple Saturdays, we packed up the car and were off!  My entire side of the family was there – a total of 17 of us.  Part of the reason we usually end up in Corolla when we go to the Outer Banks is primarily because we require a fairly large house.  The house was fine, but definitely a little rundown compared to what we had expected.  I’m not complaining though b/c it was a mansion compared to where we live.  The king size bed alone was enormous compared to our full size bed at home!  We have a feeling that the house was on the brink of foreclosure since the house was for sale and we saw the word short sale on the sign.  And not to mention the cable didn’t work the entire week – we all speculated that the owner must not have paid the bill.

We really didn’t do a whole lot other than just rest and relax.  Most of us spent a lot of time during the day on the beach, and we went out a few times in the evenings.  We made our annual excursion to play mini golf.  This course was more like actual golf than the Putt-putt that I’m used to.  It was pretty hard, and I am not proud to say that I came in last!  🙁  We also spent some time at the local Dairy Queen.  We have DQ here in Richmond, but for some reason I rarely go there except when at the beach.  I’m in love with the new mini blizzards!  So yummy!  We did a little window shopping one afternoon when it rained.  It was nice to take a little break from the sun after I fried the tops of my feet!

Overall, it was a great time and I was definitely bummed to have to come home.  Although it was a wonderful vacation, I couldn’t help but think about how different it would have been with a 1 year old little boy.  We would have been lugging much more than just 2 beach chairs and towels to the beach each day.  And I probably would have done very little sitting and much more chasing after my son.  While I thoroughly enjoyed the rest and relaxation, I wish it could have been different in that regard.  I’m hopeful that we will experience life at the beach with our child in the future, but this summer wasn’t our time.  I can’t deny that it bummed me out some, but the Lord was gracious not allowing me to dwell on it the entire time.

Although I didn’t take many pictures at all, here are a few!

I found out later that it’s a good idea to let your camera get acclimated to the humidity before taking pictures.  Certainly not the most flattering picture of Savannah and I, but oh well!
Love seeing that boy’s name in the sand.  If the sun wasn’t so bright, maybe I could have avoided cutting off part of it!
Me and my sis!
The boys enjoying the waves!
Kev and I enjoying our last night!
Self-portraits are becoming a tradition!
I am determined now to never let 3 years go by without a trip to the beach. If you’re ever looking for some fantastic beaches on the east coast, check out the Outer Banks of North Carolina!  We love it there!

    Sounds like you had a great time! I think that I have the exact same swimsuit top as you….did you get it at Old Navy? I got one online and it looks just the same! 🙂 Haven't even worn it once and the summer is over!! But we are taking a full family (my side) vacay in March after the baby comes so I figured I would still need the extra "room" to cover things up then!! haha!

    Have a wonderful day!!
