Establishing My Morning Routine {Week #1}

June 10, 2014 by Sarah

Starting late last week, I’ve been working on establishing a morning routine.  It may sound crazy to some of you or like a no-brainer to others, but I finally got fed up enough to where I wanted to take some action.

There are certain tasks that simply have to get done and others that I want to get done, but I’ve been frustrated with my lack of focus in the mornings.  I really hate scrambling to make the bed right before the kids and I are about to head out for errands because I got sidetracked on something that could have waited until later in the day!  I’m hoping that with a little intentionality, concerted effort, and refocusing of my morning priorities, they will all become habitual within a couple of weeks.

So last week, I sat down and made a list of things I’d like to get done in the morning before the kids and I really get going with our day.  Ideally, I’d love to have all of these finished before the children wake, but I’d be happy if I just got some of them done.  I’m hoping that if I can get a jump start on these daily tasks, it will set us all up for success with all the other things we have planned for the day {whether it be errands, other household chores, or fun outings}.

Rather than put a specific time for each task, I thought I’d list them in my ideal order and length of time for each task.  I don’t want to be rigid with this, but use this more as a guide so I can keep myself on track if I find myself loosing focus or dragging in the morning.  {I didn’t include other basics like eating breakfast or getting the kids ready b/c those will happen regardless}.

Morning Routine Tasks

1.  Shower/get dressed {20 mins}
I feel like such a bum when I’m unshowered and still in my pajamas.  I am so much more productive and ready to tackle the day when I’ve taken the time to shower and get ready.
2.  Bible Reading/Prayer {30 mins}
This has been a struggle and I’m tired of the inconsistency.  I’m praying that eventually this time will be like eating and drinking, where I simply cannot go about my day without it, but until then, I’ve decided that I need to plan for it.  At the end of the day, my relationship with God is top priority so it needs to be reflected in how I spend my time.
3.  Make bed {5 mins}
Even if the rest of my house is in total chaos, I feel like all is right with the world when my bed is made.  I’m not quite sure why, but my room looks 100% more disheveled when the bed is unmade.
4.  Unload dishwasher {5 mins}
I despise unloading the dishwasher, but it’s even worse to have the dishes for the day piling up in the sink because I haven’t unloaded the ones from the day before.  Ugh!  I can keep up with the dishes so much better if I start with an empty dishwasher in the mornings.
5.  Start a load of laundry {2 mins}
I can keep the laundry under control if I do at least one load per day.  I might as well get it going so I can dry it and maybe even fold it before lunchtime.
6.  Check email {5-10 mins}
I love checking my email in the morning.  I may not respond to them all, but I love being able to “check in” with the world through my email account.  Maybe I’m just weird.
7.  Read blogs/respond to any comments {5-10 mins}
This one is basically as time permits.  Ideally, I’d love to check in with my blog and glance over some of my favorite reads before the day gets going, but it’s not a big deal if I can’t get to this one.  It can always wait until naptime if necessary.
* * * * * *

Ideally, if I wanted to accomplish ALL of these before the kids wake, I’d need to wake up no later than 6:15am.  That’s honestly not too bad and something totally feasible.  At the very latest though, I’d love to have all of these done by around 9am, so that I’m ready to move onto the other tasks for the day, which allows for some flexibility if I need some extra sleep on certain days.  I’m not a morning person by nature, so baby steps are key for me!

So far, I’ve been doing fairly well with it.  Today was the first day that I really had everything done by 9am, but even on the days when I didn’t accomplish that goal, I still felt like I got “the basics” done before we left the house and was in better shape for the rest of the day.

I’ll keep you posted on how I do as this week progresses since this will be my first full week trying this out.

Any of you have a standard morning routine?

If so, any tips you’d like to share?

I'm actually cleaning/dusting the ceiling fan in our guest room. I saw this tip years ago and I've been doing it ever since, although probably not as often as I should! 🤪

Snag an old pillowcase and drag it off each blade so the dust stays inside of it. Then, wash it in your next laundry load for easy clean up!

Is there anything wrong with a large and expensive kitchen? Nope!

This house was built in the 1940s and likely housed a family our size, or maybe larger. It's amazing to think how our concept of wants and needs have changed since then.

"The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness "The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness we feel is found not in us but outside of us. The solutions to our problems and pain aren't found in self-love, but in God's love.

The God who created us, who created the universe, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is the one who provides us with the purpose and satisfaction we're seeking. While self love depletes, God's love for us doesn't. He showed us his love by sending Jesus to die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever with him. Self-love is superficial and temporary. God's love is profound and eternal."

"The first myth that you are enough. My counter was this: you're not you'll never be enough, and that's okay, because God is."
