{June} End of the Month Grocery Challenge

June 30, 2014 by Sarah

As the primary money manager in our house, I’m usually on top of things when it comes to Kev’s pay schedule.  I usually know his pay schedule better than he does – ha!  You can probably imagine the surprise that I had when I woke up on Friday morning and saw that Kev’s paycheck had NOT been deposited as I had anticipated.

For some reason, I was thinking he got paid the last Friday of every month, but it’s actually the last weekday of every month, which fell on today this month.  OOPS!  My bad!

I had planned to do a big grocery shopping trip this weekend to get us stocked back up since our return from vacation.  {I don’t know about you, but I try to eat up everything in our fridge before we leave town for a week.}

On Friday afternoon, I scurried around and came up with a menu plan to get us through the weekend until payday.  Luckily, I had $16 left in our cash envelopes for the month {I think $10 of it may have been from our clothing envelope, but you do what you have to do!}.  It wasn’t much since I thought we were starting a new month on Friday, but I was determined to see if I could pull it off.

Here is what I planned and how my shopping trip went on Friday.

MENU

We keep breakfast and lunch pretty simple, so I mostly plan out my dinner menu.  I just keep the basics for breakfast and lunches on hand.

Friday:  spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, bread

Saturday:  LEFTOVERS

Sunday:  cooking out with friends {bringing corn on the cob and cookies to share}

* * * * * *

I made my grocery list and scanned the grocery store flyers to see if there were any great sales on some of the items I knew I needed.  I didn’t see anything that blew me away, so I headed out to Kroger.  Kroger tends to be my go-to store these days.  They run some great sales and they send me all sorts of coupons in the mail.

bagged salad – $1.94 {was on sale and used store coupon}
bananas – $1.65
corn on the cob (12) – $3.96
peaches (3) – $1.14

bread – $1.00
2% milk – $2.29 {marked down}
Cheerios – $.99 {Mega event & had coupon}
Hellman’s mayo – $1.49 {Mega event & had coupon}
spaghetti (4) – $.96 {Mega event & had coupon}
Propel water – FREE {Kroger ecoupon}
Total w/ taxes:  $15.87
Grocery envelope (start):  $16.00
Purchase:  $15.87
Grocery envelope (as of now):  $.13
I had a few extra items in my cart at first, but I ended up putting some of them back because they weren’t “necessities” and I knew they would have taken me over.  I knew I’d be back soon.

Our plan worked out well and I’m happy to report that we made it through the weekend just fine!

Have you ever gotten payday incorrect and had to scramble?

I'm actually cleaning/dusting the ceiling fan in our guest room. I saw this tip years ago and I've been doing it ever since, although probably not as often as I should! 🤪

Snag an old pillowcase and drag it off each blade so the dust stays inside of it. Then, wash it in your next laundry load for easy clean up!

This is where the meal magic happens in our house. This is where the meal magic happens in our house. Don't ever let anyone convince you that you have to have a large (and often expensive) kitchen in order to feed your family.
.
Is there anything wrong with a large and expensive kitchen? Nope!
.
Can they be helpful?  Absolutely!

This house was built in the 1940s and likely housed a family our size, or maybe larger. It's amazing to think how our concept of wants and needs have changed since then.

Maybe someday we'll have a larger kitchen, but for now, I'm thankful that this small kitchen allows me to have everything at my fingertips quickly! 😁
"The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness "The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness we feel is found not in us but outside of us. The solutions to our problems and pain aren't found in self-love, but in God's love.

The God who created us, who created the universe, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is the one who provides us with the purpose and satisfaction we're seeking. While self love depletes, God's love for us doesn't. He showed us his love by sending Jesus to die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever with him. Self-love is superficial and temporary. God's love is profound and eternal."

"The first myth that you are enough. My counter was this: you're not you'll never be enough, and that's okay, because God is."
