Weekly Focus Room: Master Bedroom

July 14, 2014 by Sarah

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend!  Ours was filled to the brim, but it was a lot of fun.  It just left me pretty worn out by the end of it, hence why I’m later getting this post up than I had hoped.  🙂

I don’t know if I’ve ever shared this on the blog, but I am a bit of a perfectionist.  If you were to walk in my house right now, you’d probably never know it because every room in my house has some unfinished project or some small pile of something that needs to be put away {or laundered}.

My Problem

What I’ve realized about perfectionists {or maybe it’s just me} is that sometimes we can get so overwhelmed by the chaos and lack of organization that we give up.  Well, I’ve decided to give something a try this summer, to see if I can make some headway on getting my house in better shape and getting some of these unfinished projects completed and piles put away before summer ends.

My Solution

I decided to pick a weekly focus room.

Along with the other basic housework that needs to happen each day or week {laundry, meal prep, kitchen cleanup, vacuuming the floors, tidying up the house, etc.}, I’ll spend any extra time I have working in my weekly focus room.  At minimum, my plan is to deep clean the focus room, but also work on any other projects that have been lingering or haven’t been completed.

I’m hoping this will help me to stay on top of my deep cleaning, but also give me the opportunity to make some progress in each of the rooms in my house.  I have long lists in my head of things I’d like to do in each room and I know I won’t complete them in one week, but I think it will help by knowing I’ve made some progress and that I’ll revisit the room again once I’ve gone through the other rooms in the house.

My First Room:  Master Bedroom

My first focus room was our master bedroom and I actually spent 2 weeks on this room because of the break for 4th of July.  I have to chuckle at the thought of calling it a master because the builders in 1940 had no idea what a master was.  But, that’s what you’re supposed to call you own bedroom, right?

Here are some of the before pictures.

The lamp next to the bed was lacking a lamp shade and our wedding portrait had yet to be hung.
My dresser….oh my dresser.  It was piled up with clothes, jewelry, and other odds and ends cluttering it all up.  {The clothes on the floor are because it was laundry day.}
Kev’s dresser wasn’t much better with junk piling up on top of it.  Clothing and shoes from weekend trips were out. See those pants?  They are newly hemmed and now put away!

I have neglected our bedroom for far too long, which is why I decided to start there.  I spend more time keeping the main living areas clean that I end up letting our room become completely out of control.  Not good…especially considering it’s our room and I’d like to think of it as our personal sanctuary.  Ha!

I have lots of ideas for this room, but I knew I couldn’t complete them all now.  So, I decided to stick to the very basics – washing the sheets and pillows, dusting, vacuuming, hanging a picture or two, looking for a new lamp and lamp shade, and just straightening up and putting things away.  The dust alone in the room was insane too.  Can we say ceiling fan?

Here’s what the room looks like now, after two short weeks of giving it some extra attention.

I started by washing our sheets and whitening our pillows.  Our wedding portrait is finally hung and the lamp next to the bed finally has a new shade.

My dresser has been cleaned off, dusted, and now has a new lamp.  The lamp adds just a bit of light and is small enough so it doesn’t take up too much space – just what I wanted.

Kev’s dresser has been cleaned off and clothes were either donated or put away.  The clear plastic bin has to stay until we can complete the renovations on our upstairs bathroom.  🙁
You can’t see from the pictures, but I dusted the entire room {baseboards, furniture, blinds, doors, etc.} from top to bottom and it was bad!  I even tried this trick to dust our ceiling fan without making a total mess.  It worked really well and made it so simple.
I hoped to work on a DIY solution for my necklace storage problem.  I have all the supplies to make a necklace board, but ran out of time to actually start the project.  Even though I’m moving on to a new focus room for the week, I’m still going to try and get the necklace board done because it’s becoming an urgent need.  Look for that post coming soon!
Next time, I’d like to work on storage for my earrings, a solution for our unorganized closet {it’s a really awkward space underneath the steps going to the second floor so please let me now if you have any suggestions}, and adding some other pictures and decor to the walls.
And now that the room itself is looking better, I’m hoping to keep it relatively tidy until the next time it’s my focus room.  Wish me luck!
This week’s focus room:  Guest Bedroom
I’ll report back next week to show you how it went.

I just made a necklace board from an old corkboard and fabric scraps for my necklaces and it makes it so much easier/less tangled! I love the idea of a wedding pic over the bed! http://www.camillecolumbia.blogspot.com

I'm actually cleaning/dusting the ceiling fan in our guest room. I saw this tip years ago and I've been doing it ever since, although probably not as often as I should! 🤪

"The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness "The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness we feel is found not in us but outside of us. The solutions to our problems and pain aren't found in self-love, but in God's love.

The God who created us, who created the universe, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is the one who provides us with the purpose and satisfaction we're seeking. While self love depletes, God's love for us doesn't. He showed us his love by sending Jesus to die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever with him.
