I love trees. My husband has no use for them and wants to cut them all down. The one thing we agree on though is that we can’t stand raking all the leaves. Since we have two large oak trees on our property, we’ve had to figure out ways to bag leaves quicker and more efficiently.

I’m going to share a little trick that has helped to make it a little easier to bag leaves. I don’t remember exactly who passed along this helpful hint, but I want to share it with you in case you might have any lingering leaves that need to be raked! This trick to bag leaves will take some of the back-breaking work out of it and make it so much easier.
First, you will need an old trashcan. As you can tell, this trashcan has seen better days, but that’s why it’s perfect for something like bagging leaves! Once you’ve selected your trashcan (ours is similar to this* one), cut the bottom out of it. Leave the sides intact.
When you’re ready to bag up your leaves, place the yard bag into the trash can and fill it up. You will still have to get the leaves off the ground (can’t help you guys with that part!) and into the trash can, but it’s so much easier to have your yard bag situated this way. It’s one less thing you have to mess with when you bag the leaves and it prevents you from needing to ask someone to help you hold the bag while you pick up the leaves.
Once your bag is full, tie up the yard bag and lift it up out of the trash can. The hole in the bottom of the can makes is so much easier to lift the bag up! I have a weak back, so this help is crucial for me. For some reason (help me physics majors), the hole in the bottom alleviates the suction in the trash can so the bag slides out easily.
This tip won’t make your leaves disappear on their own (I wish!), but it certainly helps make the bagging process a lot easier. My husband and I made so much progress bagging leaves using this method. Now we are just waiting for them to be picked up by our county!
