Frugal Fashion Friday – Hello Leggings

November 22, 2013 by Sarah

Okay, so today’s post is pretty monumental.  You faithful readers get to be some of the first people to see me in a pair of leggings. {Gasp!}

For some reason, I always thought leggings were only for skinny women.  But, as I have slowly been debunking my preconceived notions {first were the skinny jeans}about who could wear certain styles, I began to see the great potential in owning my very first pair.  Just take a look online or at the mall and you’ll see them everywhere and on every shape and size.  I LOVE it!

If you are following my blog Facebook page, then you read my initial reaction to wearing them.  Sheaffer at Pinteresttoldmeto has been raving about these particular leggings for weeks now, but I was not excited about spending more than $10 on them so I held off {I know that probably sounds ridiculous to many of you}.  I figured I’d wait until my Christmas shopping was done or some other time when they were drastically reduced, or just try some other brand that was much cheaper.

But I took the plunge when my grandmother told me she was giving me money for Christmas.  Score one for Nanny!  It made me feel better that they were originally $36 but on sale for $27 {sale is still on}.

Well, let me tell you, these leggings are amazing.  They fit great, are super comfortable, and the wide waist band is my hero.  I did end up having to exchange them because I discovered a hole in the seam shortly after I had put them on.  When Sheaffer said the customer service at Nordstrom was phenomenal, she was not joking.  I was a fish out of water in the store, but an associate walked me all the way to a different floor so we could swap out for a new pair.  It was so easy and she was so nice.  The other cool thing about Nordstrom is that they have FREE SHIPPING…..all the time.  There’s really no reason not to at least try them.

So this week’s outfit is my first attempt at sporting my new leggings.  When I ordered my leggings, I just knew that I’d need to reference Sheaffer’s fun post about how to wear leggings.  As Sheaffer would say, leggings are NOT pants and I did not want to mess this up.

Here was my inspiration photo {pinned from Sheaffer’s post}.

LEGGINGS 101: Leggings are NOT pants

And here is my version with my new pair of leggings and other items from my closet.
I wore my white tank underneath my denim shirt.  I’ve gotten tons of use out of my denim shirt this fall, so I’ll have to snag another one at some point.  Perhaps in the darker color shown in the inspiration photo.

I layered my long cream sweater over it and then threw on one of my new infinity scarves.  I’d eventually love to grab a leopard print scarf, so the brown/black chevron sort of remind me of leopard.

I was trying to add some color with my earrings, but you can’t see them too well in the pictures.  They have some pink and turquoise colors in them.

I had to wear the leggings with my boots, of course.  I’m in love with the cognac/light brown boots in the inspiration picture, but these are all I’ve got right now.  I’m hoping to snag up a deeply discounted pair on Black Friday or maybe at the end of the season.
I thought this outfit worked pretty well, but I’m definitely on the hunt now for some tunics or longer sweaters.  If I’m going to be wearings leggings, I want to do it right!  🙂
Let me know what you think!
Here’s the breakdown on the outfit:

Very cute – but yes leggings are NOT pants so no short shirts! 😉 When we were in DC we saw lots of women wearing leggings with the wrong tops and it was NOT pretty. For my own self I have to wear a tunic or longer sweater like you did with them….then I feel ok! 🙂

I think that was my biggest hesitation with getting them – having no concept of how to wear them modestly. I'm still figuring it all out…obviously! 🙂

GREAT outfit, sarah! this is my favorite of your frugal fashion friday installments so far. you look great! you got the proportions of your outfit perfect and everything looks very well thought out. aren't leggings great?! i just love them and they are a staple in my fall/winter wardrobe. i think they key to making them look great is the right boots and sweater….which you accomplished! keep it up! and get some more leggings in different colors too. i have charcoal, olive green, navy, and oatmeal in addition to basic black. you'd be surprised how easy it can be to wear those other colors too!

Thanks, Erin! I would definitely love to get more colors at some point. Where do you get yours?

HEY! Don't we still owe you a pair of boots from like 8 years ago? Those brown ones look awesome, but I warn you that if you buy a pair, you might distract Kevin a bit toooo much…

Very cute! I have capri leggings that I wear in the summer, but for whatever reason, I haven't bought any full length ones for the winter. I need to do that!

Yes you do! I'm totally on the leggings train now {even though it was just last week when I jumped on}! 🙂

"The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness "The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness we feel is found not in us but outside of us. The solutions to our problems and pain aren't found in self-love, but in God's love.

The God who created us, who created the universe, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is the one who provides us with the purpose and satisfaction we're seeking. While self love depletes, God's love for us doesn't. He showed us his love by sending Jesus to die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever with him.
