Winter Reading List Review & Summer Reading List

July 24, 2014 by Sarah

I’ve been a total slacker when it comes to my reading goals.  My goal wasn’t even that ambitious {to read 12 books this year}, but I’ve totally gotten off track.  I’m hoping to catch up a bit, but with a little one due to arrive at the end of October, I’m not going to beat myself up if it doesn’t happen.  In fact, I may just change my reading goal now to 9 books and give myself a total pass for the fall.

I was only able to finish 1 of the books from my winter reading list, but I still wanted to share some of my thoughts on the book that I did complete.

How to Blog for Profit (Without Selling Your Soul)*
by Ruth Soukup

This ebook was recommended to me by Crystal Paine, the author of MoneySavingMom.  She has raved about this book so much, even saying it’s been the most insightful book on blogging that she has ever read.  That’s a pretty strong review, considering Crystal is a very successful blogger herself.  Let’s just say that this ebook did not disappoint whatsoever.

I started reading it as soon as I was able to get my hands on a Kindle {thanks to my sweet sorority sister who generously gave me hers since she was no longer using- SO sweet!}.  The author, Ruth blogs at LivingWellSpendingLess, which is a very successful frugal living blog.  She really knows her stuff when it comes to blogging and has been able to support her family through blogging.  She is so kind to pass along her wisdom to those of us who are desperate to learn the ropes!

I ate this book up so quickly, but plan to unpack it more as I have the time.  This ebook will be a great resource for the future as I learn more about how to turn my hobby into a part-time income.  One of the things I loved about the book was how she breaks down the overall subject {how to blog for profit} into practical and actionable topics.  At the end of each chapter, she even gives some actions steps you can take to make some traction.  While I haven’t implemented everything she suggests {mostly due to time or lack of resources}, her advice regarding the use of Pinterest has been extremely helpful and I have seen immediate results.  Who knew?  Well, Ruth did!

If you are looking to turn your blog into a revenue stream, then you absolutely need to read this book.  It will be a huge inspiration and resource and get you headed in the right direction!

Now that I’ve got some closure on my winter reading list, I thought I’d share with you my summer reading list.  In the hopes of catching up a little and since I’m already currently reading some of these, I’m including 4 books this month.

Relationship Principles of Jesus*
by Tom Holladay
This book was recommended to me back in the spring, when our church was going through  Rick Warren’s 40 Days of Love study.  Many people from our church read it in conjunction with the Rick Warren study and raved about it.  So, when I found out the women in our church were going to be reading it together, I was definitely excited to read it for myself.  We’re about halfway through the book and it’s already been great!
Life Interrupted*
by Priscilla Shirer

I’ve been reading through this book together with a friend from church.  I haven’t done many of Priscilla’s Bible studies or read many of her books, but I really enjoyed listening to her speak last April.  She is phenomenal Bible teacher and I learn so much from her.  We’re going through the book slowly, but it’s still been really good.
Sheet Music*
by Kevin Leman

This book was recommended to us by a couple of friends from church.  I haven’t cracked it yet, but I am hoping to very soon.
One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are
by Ann Voskamp

I don’t think I’ve met anyone who had read this book and hasn’t said it’s been life changing.  If the book is anywhere near as beautifully written as her blog, A Holy Experience, then I know I’m in for a treat.  This has been on my “list” for a while now, but I’m really going to try and finish it up this summer!

What books have you been reading this summer?

I'm actually cleaning/dusting the ceiling fan in our guest room. I saw this tip years ago and I've been doing it ever since, although probably not as often as I should! 🤪

Snag an old pillowcase and drag it off each blade so the dust stays inside of it. Then, wash it in your next laundry load for easy clean up!

This is where the meal magic happens in our house. This is where the meal magic happens in our house. Don't ever let anyone convince you that you have to have a large (and often expensive) kitchen in order to feed your family.

Is there anything wrong with a large and expensive kitchen? Nope!

Can they be helpful? Absolutely!

This house was built in the 1940s and likely housed a family our size, or maybe larger. It's amazing to think how our concept of wants and needs have changed since then.

Maybe someday we'll have a larger kitchen, but for now, I'm thankful that this small kitchen allows me to have everything at my fingertips quickly! 😁
"The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness "The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness we feel is found not in us but outside of us. The solutions to our problems and pain aren't found in self-love, but in God's love.

The God who created us, who created the universe, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is the one who provides us with the purpose and satisfaction we're seeking. While self love depletes, God's love for us doesn't. He showed us his love by sending Jesus to die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever with him. Self-love is superficial and temporary. God's love is profound and eternal."

"The first myth that you are enough. My counter was this: you're not you'll never be enough, and that's okay, because God is."
