I recently saw some black and white bathroom signs from Pottery Barn that I thought would look so cute on the wall in our upstairs bathroom, but the sizes and price (wowzer!) would not work. My brain started churning and I decided to create my own Pottery Barn bathroom sign knockoff!

The upstairs bathroom renovation (which is primarily used by my kids) has taken 4 years and I’m thrilled it’s finally done! For months, the wall above the toilet has been the only thing standing between me officially marking that room off our project list. To be fair, the bathroom has been fully functioning for about 9 months, but I have been working on the final touches since then.
The bathroom doesn’t have much wall space to decorate, but that one space above the toilet has stumped me for a while. I decided to look for some artwork or a print to hang in that space. The beadboard comes up pretty high already, so I decided against a shelf. I figured some simple framed pieces would do the trick.
I tried a couple of options from stores, but there was always something wrong. Some prints were either too small or couldn’t be combined easily to make a good grouping. I purchased another piece of artwork, but it competed with the pattern of the shower curtain on the opposite side.
After scouring tons of other websites, I decided to check out Pottery Barn. I loved their black and white bathroom signs!
Too bad those sizes wouldn’t work and those prices were out of the question. The wheels started turning and I decided to try making my own knockoff prints using Canva!
Pottery Barn Bathroom Sign Knockoff
Here’s what I used for my Pottery Barn bathroom print knockoff:
- (2) 11×14 picture frames
- black spray paint*
- (2) white 11×14 mats cut for 8×10 photo*
- double-sided tape*
- (2) 8.5×11 pieces of cardstock with printed image
Step 1: Make the prints
I used Canva to create an 8 x 10 design inspired by the original signs from Pottery Barn.
Even though I used 11 x 14 frames, I decided to stick with 8 x 10 prints so I could print them easily on 8.5 x 11 card stock. Since my design was 8 x 10 and I was printing on 8.5 x 11 card stock, I made sure to keep that in mind when I was spacing out my design. I probably could have made the designs larger and printed them at a print shop, but I wanted to keep it simple and print them myself.
Designing the prints was as simple as selecting fonts (font = Norwester) and getting it spaced the way I wanted. Super duper easy!

Step 2: Paint frames
I determined to keep this project on the cheap, so I hunted down some 11×14 frames at a local thrift store. I paid $5 for both frames and was thrilled! The frames were not identical, but I thought they would do just fine.
I picked up some Rustoleum paint* from a local craft store and got to work spraying them. One frame was already black, but I sprayed a thin coat to make sure it matched the other one. The second frame needed a couple of coats to make sure the wood didn’t show through.
Step 3: Mat the print
In order to make the 8×10 print fit into the 11×14 frame, I matted the prints. I picked a white mat so that it would give the look of a larger print.
Double sided tape* worked perfectly for this. I taped around the edge of the picture opening and then laid the mat on top of the print once everything was lined up. It was very simple.
Step 4: Hang
One print had all the hangers attached, but I had to purchase a hanger from the craft store for the other. It was a simple little kit and took me about 5 minutes after a little pre-drilling into the frame.
Then, it was time to hang the prints! I wish I had a methodical process for that, but I don’t! I just eyeball it most of the time and start nailing the holes. 🙂
These Pottery Barn bathroom sign knockoff prints are really simple, but I think that’s what I like so much about them. I love how the black and white ties into the tile on the floor and does not compete at all with pattern in the shower curtain. Rather than add pops of color with the prints themselves, I’m really loving pops of color through linens and other décor items.
I imitated the Pottery Barn look, but for pennies on the dollar. The cost of supplies was only $15!

Sarah, this looks amazing! You did such a great job. I think I’m going to have to print those out and put them in my boy’s bathroom! 🙂

Thanks, Kaitlin!! The upstairs bath is actually the one my kids use, which is why I think I loved the “motherisms.” 🙂 Let me know how it turns out if you do decide to use them! –Sarah 🙂
