Cleft Palate Update

March 29, 2013 by Sarah

A little over a month ago, Kevin and I took Brady to his first appointment with the folks at the Center for Craniofacial Care at Children’s Hospital of Richmond.  The great thing about this team is that they are a well-oiled machine.  This is what they do all day, everyday and from my experience with them so far, they have a very good system in place for caring for their patients.
Rather than having to make separate visits to all the doctors who will follow Brady through his cleft palate repair, they come together in one place a few times a month.  They warned us that it would be a long morning, but Kevin and I were actually pleasantly surprised at how quickly it went and how little time we spent sitting and waiting between doctors.
We met with the Pediatric Craniofacial Surgeon, Pediatric Dentist, Audiologist, ENT, Psychologist, and Speech Pathologist.  Overall, we left the clinic feeling very positive about Brady’s overall progress and our plan for his cleft palate repair.  They also all raved at how cute our little guy is, which is always nice to hear!
Brady did have an issue passing the hearing test, but the audiologist said she saw some fluid in his ears (he was slightly congested and sneezing that day although they were not actually infected) and felt like that was why he did not pass.  When he was seen by the ENT, they essentially said the same thing but did tell us they would schedule a follow up test which we have coming up in April.
We probably spent the most time with the surgeon.  Upon examining him again, she felt like the best time frame to repair his type of cleft would be the 8-10 month mark.  With that, we went ahead and scheduled his surgery for June 19th.  This date could be pushed up if Brady begins having issues with ear infections.
The surgeon answered our questions regarding the repair, but I told her that I honestly didn’t even want to know all the intricate details.  I get emotional just thinking about them putting my little guy under anesthesia and operating on his little mouth, so I’d rather just spend time praying rather than asking her about every detail of how the repair will be performed.  We got all of our basic questions answered for now and I will certainly ask more at the pre-op appointment in June if any come up.

Our hope is that this will be his only surgery, but we won’t know until later.  He will be followed for years after the surgery and we will tackle this one step at a time!  If you are up for it, we’d love it if you’d consider praying for Brady’s surgery in June (it’s never too early)!  I pray for God to heal his cleft palate every single day and that God would use it for His glory somehow.

Sitting in the waiting room at the clinic was bittersweet.  While Brady’s cleft palate is not evident to strangers, many of the children we saw have very visible birth differences.  While part of me couldn’t help but feel compassion towards those children and what they have been through or will go through, there was another part of me that just couldn’t help but smile.  They were all precious…just the way they were.  Children are a gift from God, no matter what they look like on the outside.
