I am a goal setting nerd. One of the reasons I love setting goals is that they help me to focus. When I see lots of good opportunities, I can get distracted easily. The next thing I know I feel like I’m spinning in circles doing lots of things with very little to show for it. Goals help center me. When I feel like life is chaotic and out of control, I pull out my goals and re-focus.
I know lots of people who like to pick 1 word as their theme for the year. I like the concept, but more than anything, I want to make sure my goals aren’t just random ideas. I want to make sure my are purposeful and will help me get to where I want to be at the end of the year. My overall theme for 2016 is: Best Yeses. I guess that’s technically 2 words. It’s based off Lysa TerKeurst’s book The Best Yes*, which I’m reading through with a friend.
My goal is to carefully evaluate and pray about every opportunity that comes before me, so that I can be really deliberate about where I commit myself and where I am spending my time. It may mean saying no more often to make sure I have the capacity to accomplish the best yeses {and the goals listed below} in this season of my life. If I actually do this like I hope, then this could be a stretching year, because I absolutely hate saying no to people.
Marriage
1. 1 date night per month {at-home or out}
2. 1 overnight date this year
Motherhood
3. 1 parent/child date per month
4. Pick a spiritual discipline to focus on with our kids {likely scripture memory}
Personal
5. Log my eating consistently {using the myfitnesspal app}
6. Read 1 book per month
Blogging
7. Post 2-3 times each week
8. Save for move to WordPress and new blog design
Financial
9. Slowly increase our retirement savings {to try and reach 15% of our gross income}
10. Start saving for a newer vehicle
Home
11. Pick 1 focus room each month
12. Create and try using a cleaning routine
One thing I plan to do this year is to have a mid-year goal evaluation. Sometimes our year ends up going in a totally different direction that we plan when we start out {like getting pregnant in January and having babies in October…ahem, Brady and Davis!}, so I am planning to do a mid-year eval in June to see how things are going and where I may need to tweak things.

This is my one-word goal (http://thoughtstipsandtales.com/2016/01/05/2016-word-year/); am still mulling a more complete list that's topped by this word, to be published soon. Good luck this year on all your goals!

Loved your word – decluttering is high on my priority list even though I didn't make it an official item on my list. 🙂
