Fall Reading List

September 23, 2013 by Sarah

Happy Monday, everyone!  We had a great weekend and I hope you did as well.

Lately, I’ve seen a few folks do some fun Fall TV posts, but since I honestly don’t watch much TV around here, I thought I’d do one for books.  I really enjoy reading, but it’s been quite a while since I’ve been able to do much of it.  My main reading goal each day is to spend a little time in my Bible, so anything above that is a bonus!

There’s something about the cooler weather that really gets me in the mood to read some good books.  Think snuggling up in bed with a warm beverage….that’s what I’m talkin’ about!

Here’s my fall reading list:

1. The Help by Kathryn Stockett
I started this back in early August when us girls went to Charleston, SC, but I haven’t picked it up since I got back.  I’ve heard so many wonderful things about it and I am determined to finish the book before renting the movie.  I picked it back up last night before bed, so I’m hoping I can finish it up in the next week or so.

2. Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey
After last week’s The Teacher’s Salary post, y’all should know how much I enjoy Dave Ramsey.  We’ve never taken his Financial Peace class, but I thumbed through this book the other day when Kev and I were in Barnes and Nobles and decided it needed to be on my fall reading list.  I haven’t started it yet, but am really looking forward to some good motivation and inspiration.

3.  Radical by David Platt

Our Friday night small group started going through this book back in the spring, but when we took a short break over the summer, we never finished it up.  So, we are picking it back up and working through it again.  I’m really being challenged by it so far, so I can’t wait to continue it.

4.  My So-Called Life as a Submissive Wife by Sara Horn

I heard about this book from a friend from our church.  She had seen an interview with the author on The Today Show and sent some of us the link to it.  This is such a misunderstood topic and one that I am becoming more and more passionate about as I realize the importance of it.  I have a long way to go in this area {Kev knows very well how stubborn and strong-willed I am}, so I’m anxious to read about her one-year experiment exploring what it means to be a submissive wife and helper to her husband.

**************************

I’ve got all but 1 of the books in my possession at this point, so I still need to track down the last one.  I love to buy books new {for some reason, I get such a thrill at bookstores}, but I’ve decided to take more advantage of the local library in our area to save a little money.  Plus, I can read each of them and decide if I think they are worth owning later.

Once I’ve finished my list for the fall, I’ll have to report back to you in some mini book review.  My plan is to try and hop in bed by 10 o’clock each night and read for about an hour before going to sleep.  I love to end my day with reading if I can.

What is on your fall reading list?

I have recently starting looking into a Dave Ramsey book to read. I'm not sure which one to start with, but he is full of great information.

I would highly recommend the 2 Dave Ramsey books that I've read so far – "The Total Money Makeover" and "Financial Peace" {I just finished up Financial Peace the other day and really enjoyed it}. He challenges our culture's way of thinking about money while also giving practical baby steps on how to build wealth over your lifetime. He also has so much great personal experience to draw from, so you know he's the real deal!! Let me know what you think when you are finished reading one! 🙂

"The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness "The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness we feel is found not in us but outside of us. The solutions to our problems and pain aren't found in self-love, but in God's love.

The God who created us, who created the universe, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is the one who provides us with the purpose and satisfaction we're seeking. While self love depletes, God's love for us doesn't. He showed us his love by sending Jesus to die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever with him. Self-love is superficial and temporary. God's love is profound and eternal."
