Frugal Fashion Friday – Grey Cardigan Edition

September 20, 2013 by Sarah

I’ve finally resigned myself to the fact that colder weather is here and I’m starting to actually get a little excited about it.  Aside from Christmas, I’m not a huge fan of winter due to the really cold weather, but I’ve really grown to love fall as I’ve gotten older.

This fall, I knew I needed to add some cardigans to my closet.  It’s really sad, but I’m realizing just how badly I’ve neglected my wardrobe over the past few years.  I could have sworn I had a basic black crew neck cardigan, but could not find it for the life of me when I was looking through my closet.  Then, I started to vaguely remember that it had gotten a small rip in it, so I’m pretty sure I had to pitch it.  Thankfully, I have another black cardigan that will work for now until I can replace my other one.

All that to say, with fall approaching, I was on the hunt for some cardigans.  They are so good for layering and adding some warmth without being bulky like a thick sweater.  I also plan to get some more in brighter colors this spring, but I figured I’d better start with the basic colors for now – navy, grey, black, etc.

What I didn’t anticipate in my hunt for cardigans were the vast array to choose from.  There are long, short,  crew neck, v-neck, 3/4 length sleeve, long sleeve, patterned, and solid colored varieties and it’s downright overwhelming!  But, this girl has to start somewhere, so I couldn’t let that phase me.

I found a cute cardigan at Target when I was browsing their clothing section.  It came in 2 of the colors I needed so I snagged the navy and grey to try on.  After much contemplation, I finally decided on a size.  I’m notorious for buying a size up for fear of shrinking and then being mad at myself when the item doesn’t shrink like I anticipated and then looks “frumpy.”  This time, I opted for my true size and will just make sure to hang dry in case.

I wore the navy blue earlier in the week with a pair of longer shorts (I was still in denial about fall) and I was pleased with how it turned out.  I had planned to have Kev snap a photo, but then forgot before I had already changed into my pajamas for the night.

I knew I wanted to wear the grey cardigan yesterday, so I hopped in Pinterest to get some ideas on what I could do to make a grey cardigan a little more exciting.  Here’s my inspiration photo for the outfit.

 I loved the yellow and blue with the grey, so I was determined to see what I could come up with from my own closet.  Here’s how it turned out.

I tried on a couple of yellow shirts to wear underneath the grey cardigan, but didn’t think they looked right.  I first tried on my pale yellow broadcloth shirt and the yellow was just too pale.  Then I tried on a longer tunic-type top and it seemed a little too busy with some ruffles on the neckline.  At the end of the day, I went with just a basic white t-shirt under the sweater and paired it with my trouser jeans.

Since I didn’t go with a yellow shirt, I knew I had to add in my yellow scarf.  I didn’t think it was quite cold enough for it at first, but it got a little chilly in the evening when I was out with some friends and I was glad I had it.
Since I didn’t have any bright blue earrings, I went for my yellow pair.  I know it’s a lot of yellow up top, but I thought it still worked.
I knew exactly what shoes I’d wear when I saw the inspiration photo.  I bought these a couple years back and I have loved them.  I’m glad I found a way to wear them into the fall and not just in spring/summer.
Overall, I was pretty pleased with the outfit.  It was super comfy, but yet I also feel like I was somewhat put together for my evening with my girlfriends.  I wish I had more blue and I sort of wish I didn’t have so much solid color, but I think it was a decent start.  {Even now as I’m writing this post, I just remembered that I have a navy striped shirt that might have worked as well.  Maybe next time!}
