This week’s Ways We Save post is something I’ve talked about here before. But, since spring and warmer weather is here, it’s time to start thinking about switching out children’s clothes. Say “goodbye” to those sweaters and pants and say “hello” to the t-shirts, shorts, and swimsuits.
There are definitely times when I score some great deals on brand new clothes {or we are gifted items which is so appreciated}, but I’d say that the vast majority of my children’s clothes are used. We’ve been blessed by folks who have either let us borrow or have their used clothes, but I’ve also become a huge fan of shopping for them myself. Although I know people who have luck at yard sales and thrift stores, I usually do well at consignment sales and consignment stores. I can find some great brands for great prices and we save a ton of money!
It can be difficult at times to step into Gymboree* or Baby Gap and keep myself under control. I really enjoy shopping and there’s something so fun about pulling the tags off a brand new outfit {for me or my kids}. And though I don’t think there’s anything wrong with buying children brand new clothes, I have a hard time paying full retail prices when I know it will make us go over our clothing budget.
Aside from budget, I think buying used is a practical approach. When kids are tiny, they grow so fast that you blink and they are already in the next size. If it weren’t for the fact that we were gifted so many of my daughter’s clothes when she was so little, I would have been depressed that she only wore each outfit maybe one time before outgrowing it. I was determined to squeeze her into my favorite outfits a couple more times!
When kids are older, they are so rough on clothes. It can be frustrating to think about how much money was spent on new clothes that are getting worn to shreds before your very eyes. Although some might argue that brand new clothes might hold up better to all the wear and tear of toddlers and preschoolers, I haven’t noticed a huge difference in our house. If the items aren’t brand new to begin with, then I worry a lot less about holes and stains {although this stain remover is fantastic!}.
I have heard from some people that it’s harder to find decent used clothing as kids get older, so I might be reaching my limit soon. Until then, I’m going to keep trying to shop used for as long as I can!
