I wasn’t planning to post about this today, but changed my mind after the afternoon I had watching Downton Abbey. I am late to the series and even though the finale to season 4 aired last night, I just finished up season 3 while the kids napped today.
As you can imagine if you watch the show for yourself, I am not a happy woman at this point. I even thought about giving up altogether because I was so aggravated and disappointed. I’ve had a few hours to digest some of it and have been assured by people I respect that I should not give up on the series, so I’m in a much better place now. 🙂
But before I jump into season 4 later this evening, I just had to get a few things off my chest. I’m obviously not a professional reviewer, but here are 6 reasons I am hooked on Downton Abbey and why I’m willing to stick it out.
1. Historical aspects
I am nowhere near the history movie fanatic that my husband is, but I have grown to enjoy historical movies/shows. History comes alive to me with visuals, when I can picture for myself what life might have been like during a certain period in history. I have a much better understanding of the aristocracy than I ever did before watching this show.
2. Fuels my obsession with Britain
I’ve always been intrigued with all things British. The concept of the monarchy and a state church fascinates me. I’m a huge Prince William and Kate fan already, so I guess this just feeds into my obsession even more.
3. Setting/costumes/scenery
The backdrop for the series is just gorgeous. The house itself and scenes of the estate are beautiful. I’d love to take a tour of it myself to really take it all in. While I have no desire to dress in the fancy clothes myself, I love seeing all the dresses and hairstyles of the time.
4. Witty dialogue
Lady Violet comes to mind obviously, but the dialogue between the characters is hysterically funny. I wish I could come up with some of those quick on your feet remarks for myself, but then I have to remind myself that they are paid actors and I am certainly not.
5. Well-acted
I’m no professional critic, but I find the acting to be remarkable. In my book, the mark of good acting is that you believe what you are seeing. They reel me in and I am believing it 100%.
6. Character development
I’m only through season 3, but I feel like the characters from season 1 are almost nowhere to be found. They might be the same physically, but they are growing, maturing, and changing right before my very eyes. I am so invested in every single character at this point because I have gotten to know their story and understand where they come from. I end up rooting for every single character at some point…even the villains.

Do you watch Downton Abbey?

I'm where you are at now. I haven't watched any of Season 4. I agree that the characters change so much. It makes it interesting. But sometimes it does get a little too sad 🙁

Yes, maybe it's good that I don't get so invested b/c I won't be so sad if things don't go the way I think they should. 🙁
