First Haircut

June 13, 2013 by Sarah

I’ve been going back and forth about Savannah’s hair for quite a bit.  I’ve known it was starting to look scraggly, but I sort of wanted to let it get longer before cutting it and evening it out.  Part of me was also holding out because I have been told that first haircut really makes them look older and takes away the baby look.  I guess I just wasn’t quite ready yet!
With summer here and the Virginia humidity starting to set in, I figured we’d better do something…and soon!  If for nothing else, this little girl looked so pitiful always pushing her hair out of her face constantly!  Since we were in Baltimore for the weekend and stayed up a couple of extra days, my mom offered to take Savannah to her hair salon for her first cut!
Miss Ruth did the cut and was so sweet with her.  She was very gentle with her and made it really pleasant.  Savannah sat in the chair very still and didn’t seem scared at all.  She enjoyed it when Miss Ruth got the squirt bottle out to wet her hair!

After taking a quick potty break in the middle of the cut (when Savannah says she has to potty, we stop whatever we are doing….ha!), Miss Ruth let her stand up so she could cut it more easily.

I had originally told Miss Ruth to trim it up good so it looked healthier, but to keep her bangs long so they would eventually grow all the way out to the length of the rest of her hair.  I don’t know about any of you children of the 80’s out there, but I have this fear of bangs because of how terrible mine were to grow out back then!  Anyway, she had originally cut them to be more like side bangs since they were still shorter than the rest of her hair, but I changed my mind and had her cut some thin bangs for the summer!  I think it turned out great!

After Miss Ruth was finished, she gave us a certificate with a little bag of Savannah’s hair.  It will make for a nice keepsake for the scrapbook!

Well, if I wasn’t convinced already, my little girl is growing up!  I knew this first haircut would solidify it for me and it certainly has!  I think I may put her hair up in pigtails for the rest of her life just so I can hold onto these little girl days!

Very cute!! I had cut bangs for Karlena but now have been trying to grow them out….but she too looks terrible b/c she hates clips and bows (except when Markel her daycare mama does it) 😉 she knows how to make me feel good! 🙂 But I have wondered if we shouldn't try and give her a trim as well….I just am not sure she would sit that well!
