Gilman Graduation Weekend

June 13, 2013 by Sarah

This past weekend, we headed up to Baltimore to attend my youngest cousin’s high school graduation.  I had planned to drive up on Friday morning, but heard it was supposed to rain a ton and made the last minute decision to drive up on Thursday evening instead.  It was a little stressful getting us packed up and out the door 12 hours sooner than originally planned, but it made for a nice and relaxing Friday!

The weekend itself was pretty low key.  The cousins enjoyed playing together and I enjoyed some cable (meaning the Hallmark channel) and some good time with my family.  If anyone who knows me wonders where I get my night owl tendencies and my love for Hallmark movies, it’s totally from my mom.  We were up until about 1:30am on Thursday night and stayed up watching Hallmark movies!

These 2 are so funny together!

Could his smile be any cuter???

On Saturday, my niece’s softball game was cancelled so we threw the ball around in the yard in the morning and ran a few errands in the afternoon.  We spent some time with my aunt and her family (3 of my younger cousins and including the one who was graduating) in the evening.  We enjoyed some yummy Andy Nelson’s BBQ (we love it so much that we had it for our rehearsal dinner almost 10 years ago)!  Kevin arrived that afternoon just in time to dig into the good food.  He drove up separately since he had to work on Friday.

I went to my old church up in Baltimore on Sunday morning, which was nice.  Kev stayed home with Brady and I took Savannah with me so she could get out of the house and play with some of the kids in the nursery.  My dad was leading a class during Sunday School so I went ahead and joined their class.  From what I understand, they are reading through the book The Resolution for Men (which I believe goes along with the movie Courageous), so the discussion resolved around parenthood, which I enjoyed a lot.  I need all the help I can get!  I’m curious if they will tackle The Resolution for Women next!

That afternoon, we were off to the graduation!  It was held outside and it couldn’t have been a nicer day!  Other than a somewhat long winded commencement speaker, it was a nice ceremony.

I hope I age as good as this lady has!  My grandmother is pushing 86!

She is what I call I red-head folks!  Not ME!

Especially proud of my cousin, Zack, who serves our country in the Navy!  Sorry ladies, he’s got a girlfriend!
Me, My sis, Mom, and the side of Dad’s face…ha!

My cousin graduated from Gilman School and they didn’t march in to the normal Pomp and Circumstance, nor did they wear cap and gowns.  Nope, not that preppy private all boys school!  They walked in wearing white pants, blue shirts, blue ties, and navy blue blazers to the tune of some pretty awesome bagpipes!  Not a bad way to do it and they sure looked handsome!  Man, I feel old again!

I almost teared up when I saw Tucker walking in.  He’s the tall, handsome blond on the right!

Waiting for his name to be called.

After the ceremony was over, we gathered for a few minutes to give out more hugs and get a quick cousin picture!  I swear, I’m the only one in my family who takes any pictures!

From Left to Right:  Me, Tucker (my aunt’s youngest), Zack (my aunt’s middle son), Jen (my sister), Steve Jr. (my aunt’s oldest), Amber (Steve’s fiance).  They are getting married in October (so looking forward to that)!

Kevin stayed at home with all the kids.  There is no way I could have enjoyed the afternoon with the kids getting restless and noisy!  We stayed up a few days after the graduation, but Kevin had to head back home on Sunday evening, so he was basically on kid duty the majority of the time he was there…he’s such a trooper!

I'm actually cleaning/dusting the ceiling fan in our guest room. I saw this tip years ago and I've been doing it ever since, although probably not as often as I should! 🤪

Snag an old pillowcase and drag it off each blade so the dust stays inside of it. Then, wash it in your next laundry load for easy clean up!

This is where the meal magic happens in our house. This is where the meal magic happens in our house. Don't ever let anyone convince you that you have to have a large (and often expensive) kitchen in order to feed your family.
.
Is there anything wrong with a large and expensive kitchen? Nope!
.
Can they be helpful? Absolutely!
.
This house was built in the 1940s and likely housed a family our size, or maybe larger. It's amazing to think how our concept of wants and needs have changed since then.
.
Maybe someday we'll have a larger kitchen, but for now, I'm thankful that this small kitchen allows me to have everything at my fingertips quickly! 😁
"The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness "The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness we feel is found not in us but outside of us. The solutions to our problems and pain aren't found in self-love, but in God's love.

The God who created us, who created the universe, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is the one who provides us with the purpose and satisfaction we're seeking. While self love depletes, God's love for us doesn't. He showed us his love by sending Jesus to die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever with him. Self-love is superficial and temporary. God's love is profound and eternal."

"The first myth that you are enough. My counter was this: you're not you'll never be enough, and that's okay, because God is."
