10 Things I’ve Learned About Kevin {over the past decade}

July 19, 2013 by Sarah

I am old.

I know this now.

I am slowly coming to grips with the fact that I am no longer as young as I feel on the inside.

Am I the only one out there who still feels like I am no more than 18 years old?  I have no idea where the time has gone!

But, part of the aging process is reaching some pretty cool milestones such as mine and Kev’s 10 year wedding anniversary!  Get outta here!  When did that happen?!

I know to all you veteran married couples out there, 10 years is just the warm up or pre-game exercises, if you will.

But it feels sort of monumental to me for some reason.  Not sure why, but it feels bigger than the others!  Maybe it’s just because I like even numbers?!!  🙂

In all seriousness though, I am so thankful that God led me to marry….and that he specifically led me to marry Kevin Ryan Eddins.

In an effort to walk down memory lane a little bit, I’m going to list 10 things that I have learned about Kevin over this past decade.  One thing for each year…or maybe a couple of things for each year if I get long-winded.  Ha!

2003

#1.  Kevin may have been more excited to get married than I was.  For the first couple of months, he was giddy all the time and would constantly tell me how fun it was to be married.  Looking back, I should have known why he was so happy all the time {wink, wink}, but I thought it was the cutest thing ever!

2004
#2.  Kevin is determined when he puts his mind to something {and living in Lynchburg, VA with less than 2 cents to your name isn’t so bad when you are high on love}.  I was so proud of Kev when he graduated with his Bachelors degree.  I remember being in tears when I walked into the Vines Center at Liberty University because I thought I would not be able to find a seat.  I wanted to see him walk across that stage so badly because I was so proud of his hard work when school did not always come easy.  We had some good times in that Fort Avenue apartment and could have cared less that we were broke.

2005

#3.  Kevin does not like to give up on his dreams.  He will pursue them with a vengeance, until the Lord makes it clear that He has other plans.  Kevin fought tooth and nail to pursue law enforcement as a career, but God closed every door possible.  It was tough for me to know how to support him during that time, especially when I had no real understanding of how hard it was for him.

2006
#4.  Kevin is one of the hardest working people I know.  He worked full-time while also taking classes at night to get certified to teach Social Studies.  He juggled his job, classes, and our marriage far better than I would have.  To go back to school as an adult is tough, but he was willing to do it in order to do what he felt God was calling him to do!

2007
#5.  Kevin is brave {and happens to look really cute with a goatee}.  His first teaching position was the summer of 2007, just months after he had completed his teaching certification and student teaching.  I would have been a nervous wreck trying to teach an entire year’s worth of material in 6 weeks when I had very little training, but he jumped right in and knocked their socks off!  His summer school position ultimately led to a full-time teaching position in the fall.  This picture was taken on vacation in Destin, FL just days after signing his contract!
2008
#6.  Kevin still loves ministering to students.  Kev and I met when we were serving in youth ministry during one of our summer breaks in college, so I knew he had a heart for seeing students love Jesus.  But, after years of not serving in that capacity, he jumped on the bandwagon again and began serving as a youth Sunday School teacher at our church.  It’s been so neat to work alongside each other for the past few years.

2009

#7.  Kevin is extremely patient with me {and is the best father in the world}.  I could give countless examples, but this was especially true during 2009 after we lost Andrew.  My grief looked completely different than his {although his was still very real}, but he never judged me or tried to diminish my feelings or emotions.  He often went along with my ways of coping because he wanted to love me the only way he knew how in the midst of heartache.  He held me a lot and listened a whole lot too.  And seeing him hold our stillborn son was priceless.

2010
#8.  Kevin is adamant, optimistic, and has strong faith.  After our loss, he was very much in favor of not waiting to try and conceive again {I think his biological clock was ticking louder than mine for once}.  I was not in disagreement, but was very afraid of infertility and/or another loss.  Kevin was positive the entire time and often had faith for me when it was hard to muster up.  He was confident that we would bring a baby home someday, even when I doubted.  We brought Savannah home on his 35th birthday in 2010.  Praise be to God!

2011

#9.  Kevin is a decent dancer when he stops worrying about what people think.  We have been to a lot of weddings during our marriage and Kev has never enjoyed dancing with me.  I love to dance, but since he hates it, I often end up on the dance floor by myself during fast songs {he will slow dance usually}.  Kev has made so much progress lately in the dancing department.  At a wedding back in 2011, he actually enjoyed dancing and we had a total blast on the dance floor together!  He hasn’t been the same since!  🙂

2012

#10.  Kevin rarely second guesses, over-analyzes, or lives in the past.  I wracked my brain throughout the entire process of selling our first home and purchasing our current home.  It got even worse when we were living with my grandmother longer than expected during the renovations.  I was a basket case and not handling the stress well, wondering if we had made the right decisions.  If Kevin’s mind went there, it didn’t stay there long.  He proceeded ahead and worked hard to get us moved into our home before our family expanded again.  Brady was born about 2 weeks after we moved.

2013

It hasn’t always been easy and it hasn’t always been roses, but I can not imagine what I would do without him. I won’t say anything cheesy like he completes me because I don’t really believe in that sort of thing (sorry to all you Jerry Maguire fans), but I will say that he complements me. With effort, a lot of prayer, the Lord’s help, and a lot of laughter, we have made it to 10 years!

We chose each other 10 years ago today, and we are still choosing each other!

Happy 10 years, Kev!  You are my hero and I love you tons!  Now where’s my gift made from tin? 🙂

I'm actually cleaning/dusting the ceiling fan in our guest room. I saw this tip years ago and I've been doing it ever since, although probably not as often as I should! 🤪

Snag an old pillowcase and drag it off each blade so the dust stays inside of it. Then, wash it in your next laundry load for easy clean up!

This is where the meal magic happens in our house. This is where the meal magic happens in our house. Don't ever let anyone convince you that you have to have a large (and often expensive) kitchen in order to feed your family.
.
Is there anything wrong with a large and expensive kitchen? Nope!
.
Can they be helpful? Absolutely!
.
This house was built in the 1940s and likely housed a family our size, or maybe larger. It's amazing to think how our concept of wants and needs have changed since then.
.
Maybe someday we'll have a larger kitchen, but for now, I'm thankful that this small kitchen allows me to have everything at my fingertips quickly! 😁
"The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness "The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness we feel is found not in us but outside of us. The solutions to our problems and pain aren't found in self-love, but in God's love.

The God who created us, who created the universe, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is the one who provides us with the purpose and satisfaction we're seeking. While self love depletes, God's love for us doesn't. He showed us his love by sending Jesus to die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever with him. Self-love is superficial and temporary. God's love is profound and eternal."

"The first myth that you are enough. My counter was this: you're not you'll never be enough, and that's okay, because God is."
