Brady at 5 Years

October 10, 2017 by Sarah

This guy is growing up so quickly – I can hardly believe it!

Here is what you are up to these days, big guy.

* You are a fair eater overall – some days are great and some days aren’t.  I feel confident that it all balances out in the end.  We try to use dessert as an incentive for you to eat your meals, but there are some times when you are totally fine missing out in order to avoid eating certain things.  You aren’t very daring and like to know what is in things before you are willing to try it.

* You are sleeping well, usually about 12 hours at night.  Bedtime is around 7pm and you are usually up by 7 or 7:30am.  You share the room with Davis, which hasn’t been a problem when it comes to sleeping.

* You do not nap during the day, but we do have a “rest time” each afternoon for an hour or two.  Very occasionally you will fall asleep during rest time, but I actually don’t like it when you do because it makes bedtime more challenging.

*  You are wetting your bed less and less these days (knock on wood!).  Sometimes you’ll go an entire week without wetting and then other weeks you’ll wet the bed two nights in a row.  You are starting to wake up on your own to go at night.  I’m pleased with your progress overall!

*  You are wearing size 5 clothes and size 13 shoes.

*  You are 45 inches tall and weigh 44 pounds.  The pediatrician says you are growing well!  You had a second set of ear tubes put in this summer and you are doing great.  You went a few months without any in, but you had some pressure building up that was affecting your hearing.  Your hearing is back to normal now that you have those tubes in!

*  You love to brush your teeth and always come to ask me if your teeth are clean.  You love getting my reassurance.  You enjoy going to the dentist!

*  Your speech seems great to me – I’ve specifically noticed that you are more talkative and more detailed in the things you tell me.  You tell me more about the things that go on at preschool and in your class at church.  I love hearing what you have to say.  Sometimes you get frustrated when you ask me questions and I don’t know the answer.

*  You are an active little guy and love to play!  You enjoy playing outside with others, but you can also be content to sit and play in the sandbox by yourself.  You like it all.  You’ve recently started to dig for all sorts of bugs and worms in the yard and love to show me what you find.

*  You like playing with your siblings, but it’s been a challenge to keep you all from fighting with one another.  You love your sister and brother so much, but also know how to push their buttons.  Sometimes I get discouraged, but then I see you hug and love on each other and I have to remind myself that you are typical children who are learning to get along with one another.  Getting along with others is a life long lesson anyway, even for adults!

* You like to play with friends, but you enjoy playing alone too.  You like to build tracks, play with blocks, play with your dinosaurs or Hot Wheels, and build puzzles, oftentimes for what seems like an hour or more.  You like to color and use markers too!

*  You are quite a little perfectionist!  I chuckle when I see you putting toys away in their exact spot or when you line things up perfectly.  Sometimes you take a longer with coloring or crafts because you take your time to do things just right.  You are like me in that regard.  Sometimes you let your perfectionism get you frustrated, so we’re working on that.  Your sister is the furthest thing from a perfectionist, so I love seeing the differences between you.

*  You are such a silly little guy!  You love it when we have dance parties and will run around dancing and singing.  I love hearing you sing the words to songs and it reminds me that you are soaking up every thing you hear.

*  You are very independent and are doing a great job learning to be a helper around the house.  You dress yourself, you help make the bed, you clean up your dishes from the table, and all sorts of other small tasks.  You do get distracted at times, but are a great example to all of us of being a helper.  By far, you are the best at cleaning up after yourself!

*  You are doing great in preschool.  You love art, music, and chapel and I hear all sorts of stories from your playground time.  I notice a big difference in the amount of information you tell me about preschool this year compared to last year.  You are much more talkative about it, which I love!  I’m excited for what is to come next year when you start kindergarten.

* * * * * *

A couple of years ago, I decided to do a yearly interview with the children so I can document their growth.  I asked the same exact questions as last year and it’s fun to hear her responses.

I'm actually cleaning/dusting the ceiling fan in our guest room. I saw this tip years ago and I've been doing it ever since, although probably not as often as I should! 🤪
.
Snag an old pillowcase and drag it off each blade so the dust stays inside of it. Then, wash it in your next laundry load for easy clean up!

This is where the meal magic happens in our house. This is where the meal magic happens in our house. Don't ever let anyone convince you that you have to have a large (and often expensive) kitchen in order to feed your family.
.
Is there anything wrong with a large and expensive kitchen? Nope!
.
Can they be helpful? Absolutely!
.
This house was built in the 1940s and likely housed a family our size, or maybe larger. It's amazing to think how our concept of wants and needs have changed since then.
.
Maybe someday we'll have a larger kitchen, but for now, I'm thankful that this small kitchen allows me to have everything at my fingertips quickly! 😁
"The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness "The answer to the purposelessness and hollowness we feel is found not in us but outside of us. The solutions to our problems and pain aren't found in self-love, but in God's love.

The God who created us, who created the universe, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is the one who provides us with the purpose and satisfaction we're seeking. While self love depletes, God's love for us doesn't. He showed us his love by sending Jesus to die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever with him. Self-love is superficial and temporary. God's love is profound and eternal."

"The first myth that you are enough. My counter was this: you're not you'll never be enough, and that's okay, because God is."

--Allie Beth Stuckey
