Frugal Fashion Friday: Rule Breaker Edition

September 13, 2013 by Sarah

I’ve been working on picking up a few things to add to my fall wardrobe this year, but I’m still not quite ready to show any of it off yet.  Most of the clothing budget for this month went to the kids wardrobes, so we’ll see how it goes.  I’m up for the challenge though!  🙂

I’m also holding onto summer clothes like you would not believe for some reason.  I’m excited for fall weather, but I’m trying to get as much wear out of my summer clothes as I can before packing them away.  It’s not like spring and summer won’t come back around next year, but I push it for as long as I can.  I’m weird, really!

With all that being said, I broke one of the main fashion rules I remember as a child.  No white after Labor Day.  Oh no, turn me in now fashion police!

And if you’re being lenient with me on the white skirt after Labor Day thing, you may want to turn me in for wearing those red ball earrings.  I’ve been told they look like they are 80’s.  Oh well, I think they are cute!

One of the main reasons I wanted to wear this was so you could see the skirt.  I can’t remember exactly what I paid for it, but it was a Goodwill find back in the spring when I was determined to stretch  my birthday money as far as it would go.  I’d heard great things about that particular location and I was really impressed.  I will definitely be back!

The skirt was originally from Talbots, so I can only imagine what the original price might have been.  {Is Talbots still open?  I haven’t seen one in quite some time!}.  I love the detail.

I decided to go simple and wear it with my black top and accessorize it with red for some color.  Only, this isn’t just a plain black top.  It has this little gathered ribbon detail along the neckline, for some added interest.  The fabric also tends to dress it up a little bit as well.

Since I had my red necklace and earrings, I figured I’d throw on my red flats as well.  I love red, black, and white together.  In my opinion, it’s classic.

Here are the details.  I wish I remembered the totals, but I’ve had most of these items for a while.  I don’t know the exact price of the skirt, but I know it was less than $10.  I’m thinking it was maybe $5-8, but I could be wrong.

Thrift stores can be so great! I found an Ann Taylor herringbone suit jacket at one last year for $2 (with the tag still on!) and have loved pairing it up with both dressy pants for church and jeans during the week. Can't wait to wear it again this fall!

Oh, I bet it is beautiful! $2 – what a steal!! It's totally insane what great buys you can find if you are willing to be patient and dig. 🙂

Thanks Megan! I'm hoping to get out thrift shopping again soon. I had to focus mostly on the kids this month, but I'm hoping to get some cute fall things too!
